Molasses Cookies

Recipe courtesy of Grand-maman Lachapelle and her mother Alexandrina Brodeur. Alexandrina was born on 8 Jun 1889 in St-Hugues de Bagot near St-Hyacinthe, Québec. She married Guillaume Lachapelle on 20 Apr 1910 in Ste-Hélène-de-Bagot. They had 10 children, only 4 of whom lived to adulthood. She was widowed at only 37 years old and never remarried. She worked very hard as a housewife, mainly in the presbyteries.

In a bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon and raisins.

In another bowl, cream the margarine (or butter), brown sugar and eggs. Mix the baking soda with the molasses, then add it to the butter mixture. Stir in the dry ingredients from the first bowl, as well as the yogurt.

Let the dough rest for 12 hours in the fridge.

The next day, form the dough into balls of about 3 cm in diameter and place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350°F for about 15 minutes.
